Tips for writing a dissertation

1. Have confidence:

This is also vital before doing anything in your life, especially when you’re writing. You have to be confident in what you are writing and feel good. It always helps to think positively about any aspect in your life. So block out those negative thoughts and be positive!

2. Reward yourself:

For all the time and work that you’ve invested, be sure you reward yourself. Give yourself something special for reaching your goals and accomplishments. It isn’t all about working too hard because it could stress you out. So make sure you treat yourself to a treat or for a massage or manicure and pedicure.

3. Write for yourself first:

When you’re initially writing, write for yourself. Don’t think about what “others” are going to think. Mind them after you’ve pretty much accomplished most of your dissertation. If you’re getting close to your final paper then go ahead and edit.

4. Have specific and measurable goals:

When planning out your goals in the beginning, make sure that they are specific and measurable. That means that you can obtain it in a certain time span. Don’t say that in a week you’ll finish the entire dissertation because that is close to impossible, especially when you want to write an excellent dissertation. Instead, set a goal such as “I will finish three pages of subsection 2.0 before 5:00pm today.”

5. Make an outline:

When you make an outline, it gives you a layout of your ideas and how your dissertation is going to flow. By doing this you have a guide when you’re ready to put your paper in structural form. Remember that an outline doesn’t have to be in sentences, but is better with a map of ideas with branches connecting one from another

6. Keep writing:

Once you get yourself started with writing, keep going. Don’t keep over analyzing because it could take longer and you might not get much done. Once you have your outline, take a look at it and write down what you feel goes into place. Revise it later when you’re finished so that you have the structure of your first draft.

7.Write in layers:

You don’t have to complete every single part of each paragraph. You can get in the main idea in one paragraph and then fill it in along the way so that you aren’t taking too long on one paragraph.

8.One page per day:

That’s right! Write a page of your dissertation a day. This is only if your deadline is still far off. It doesn’t necessary have to be in order, but your goal is one page a day so that you don’t cram when the deadline is fast approaching.

9.Have rough drafts:

Don’t be afraid to make rough drafts. They are there for a reason, that is to write and to edit after and to keep improving each draft until the final paper.

10.Time yourself:

This is vital especially if you feel like you are taking up too much time in one chapter or one page. Use a timer on your phone or computer and see how long it takes for you to write so that you can manage your time correctly.

11.Take 15 minute breaks:

You honestly can’t write well if you don’t take breaks in between. You have to let your brain rest so that it could think freshly. Get up and walk around, stretch and have a snack.

12.Change your physical environment when writing:

After you work in the same place for a long period of time, you start to get too comfortable in that area. Try changing it up at times. Try writing in a coffee shop or library and make sure you surround yourself around people who are also working. Somewhere quiet or with soft classical music.

13.Try writing early in the day:

It is always best to write early in the day so that your mind is still fresh. Try not to procrastinate and write when the day is young.

14.Don’t compare yourself:

This is important to get things done right and with confidence. Don’t compare your writing with someone else’s writing because people do write differently. No one person can write exactly alike. They may write similarly but not exactly the same. You may read other’s writing to gain some feedback and tips but don’t copy them.

15.“Activity is not necessarily productivity.”
This is very true because what matters is output. It doesn’t mean that just because you’re sitting at your desk, writing, doodling up whatever that you’re being productive.
