What is Flipped classroom?
The flipped classroom or flipped learning is a form of blended learning and is a pedagogical model in which the lecture & homework elements of a course are reversed. In simpler words, short video of lectures are viewed at home by students before the class session and in the classroom time is devoted to exercises, discussions or projects. The video lectures are generally created by the instructor and is posted online. The ease with which video can be accessed and viewed today has made it so pervasive that the flipped model has come to be identified with it.

The flipped classroom draws attention on concepts like active learning, course podcasting, hybrid course design, student engagement and many more. The aim of a flipped classroom is the re-purposing of class time into a workshop, where in the students can:
- Inquire about lecture content
- Interact with one another
- Test their skills in applying their knowledge
How does a flipped classroom work?
There is no one model for flipped classroom- this term is widely used to describe almost any class structure that offers prerecorded lectures and is then followed by in-class exercises. In a common model, student might view varied lectures of seven to ten minutes each. Online quizzes and other activities are conducted in different ways to test what students have learned. Immediate feedback of the quizzes conducted may clarify you the points of confusion. On site experts or instructors suggest various approaches, clarify content and monitor progress of students.

Significance of Flipped Learning or Flipped Classroom
In a traditional classroom lecture, 'students often try to capture and understand what is being said by the instructor or the speaker'. They cannot stop them to reflect upon what is being said and miss the significant points as they are trying to transcribe the words of instructors. In contrast to these traditional lectures, the use of video or other prerecorded media puts the lectures under the students control as in the videos, they can watch, rewind and forward as per their needs. Lectures that can be viewed more than one time may help those students whose first language is not English. The biggest significance of flipped learning is that the students can devote more time to application of concepts and instructors can get a better opportunity to detect the errors in thinking.

Implications for teaching and learning:
The flipped classroom constitutes the role change of instructors as well as students. The instructors give up their front of the class position in favor of more collaborative contribution to the teaching process. There is a great change in the role of students i.e. many of the students are used to be passive participants in the education process. The flipped learning or flipped classroom makes the students active participants and puts more responsibility for learning on students while providing them greater motivation to experiment.
